Dubuque man attempts to fire weapon while being arrested

jail prison sentence arrest

Dubuque police say a man attempted to fire a weapon while being placed under arrest on Thursday night.

Police say they around 10:30 that night they were called to the Casey’s General Store on Peru for the report of a disturbance.

Authorities say after they had arrived, 28-year old Kentrell Powell ignored a command to stop walking away and was arrested.  Police say while Powell, who was reportedly intoxicated, was being place under arrest he started to lean back excessively as if he were “trying to reach down his backside.      Police body camera footage picked up a snap sound similar to a handgun hammer dropping, and officers retrieved a gun from Powell. Police say a round in the barrel of the weapon had a mark on it showing the hammer dropped on the round but the gun didn’t fire.

Powell now faces a number of charges in the incident.
