A Dubuque man has been sentenced to over 12 years in federal prison for attempting to shoot a firearm at a police officer.
29-year-old Kentrell Powell was sentenced this week in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids for the incident occurring in August of last year.
Powell stole liquor bottles from a gas station in Dubuque. When police arrived, Powell walked away from officers, was ordered to stop.
As officers searched Powell, he repeatedly tried to reach into his back pockets while officers told him to stop. Powell reached his hands into his pockets again, and an officer “heard a sound consistent with the action of a firearm. When the officer looked down, he saw Powell pointing a small pistol at him. Examination of the pistol showed a round of ammunition inside the gun had a strike mark consistent with the round having misfired.
Powell must also serve three years of supervised release following imprisonment.
