Dubuque Police are warning to be wary of a rental scam.
Police say a Dubuque resident recently reported the scam after finding a house for rent online. The “landlord” requested money for a background check before showing the property. The scam victim said a tour was scheduled, but no one showed up and contact stopped afterward. The individual could not be verified.
Police say to avoid becoming a victim: never send money before viewing a property, verify landlords and property managers, be cautious of listings found on social media and avoid paying with debit cards or electronic transfers.
