State Tournament: Wahlert Baseball Advances, Wahlert and Western Dubuque Softball Earn 1st Round Wins

The Wahlert Golden Eagles overcame five fielding errors to advance to the 3A state semi-finals with a 9-8 come from behind victory over number 8 seed Knoxville at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids.

In a game that started two hours late due to weather, the Golden Eagles were down by 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth and used and RBI single by Hunter Hill and then a 2 RBI double by Graham Ahlers to help score four runs and take a one run lead to the 7th. Knoxville put the tying run on base in the top of the 7th, but couldn’t bring it across.

Wahlert now 35-6 will play in the semi-finals on Wednesday at 4:30pm and meet the winner of the Western Dubuque-North Polk contest  which will be resuming at 8:30 this morning after heavy storms caused the remainder of the first day schedule to be pushed back. The Bobcats are leading 2-0 in the bottom of the first when play resumes.

At the 2A state baseball tournament today in Carroll: Cascade and Dyersville Beckman Catholic square off at 4:30pm in the quarterfinals.

At the state softball tournament in Fort Dodge, both Wahlert Catholic and Western Dubuque advanced into 2nd round winner’s bracket games.

In Class 3A: #2 seed Wahlert defeated #7 seed West Delaware 9-1 in 5 innings.  The Golden Eagles now 36-and-6 will meet Van Meter in a second round matchup in the championship bracket at 5:30 this evening at Harlan Rogers Park, you can hear the game on 101.1 The River with pregame around 5:15pm.

In Class 4A: #4 seed Western Dubuque topped #5 seed Winterset 11-5 and will meet top seed A-D-M at 12:30 this afternoon.
