Due to continued extreme heat and humidity, the City of Dubuque is extending operation of its public cooling centers through Friday, Sept. 3. During this time, temperatures are forecast to be in the 90s with high humidity, which are expected to combine to produce heat index readings over 100.
The City of Dubuque activated public cooling centers earlier this week. The following cooling centers will be open the listed hours on Friday:
- Bunker Hill Golf Course Clubhouse, 2200 Bunker Hill Rd.
- 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.
- Carnegie-Stout Public Library, 360 W. 11th St.
- 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
- Dubuque County Democrats, 123 Main St.
- 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.
- Dubuque Intermodal Transportation Center Lobby, 950 Elm St.
- 6:45 a.m. – 6:15 p.m.
- Dubuque Rescue Mission, 398 Main St.
- 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.
- ImOn Ice Arena, 1800 Admiral Sheehy Dr.
- 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.
- Kennedy Mall (public areas), 555 John F. Kennedy Rd.
- 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.
- Multicultural Family Center, 1157 Central Ave.
- 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
- Petco, 2541 Northwest Arterial
- 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.
- PetSmart, 1300 John F. Kennedy Rd.
- 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.
- Salvation Army of Dubuque, 1099 Iowa St.
- 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
The City of Dubuque is advising residents to take precautionary measures to prevent heat-related illness. Although anyone at any time can suffer from heat-related illness, the people at greatest risk include:
- People aged 65 or older
- Infants and young children
- Overweight individuals
- People who are performing manual labor or exercising outdoors
- People who have chronic health conditions, especially heart disease or high blood pressure, or those who take certain medications, such as those for depression, insomnia, or poor circulation
