Battle of the Super Sandwiches

sandwich
I can’t really begin to describe how utterly delicious our Super Sandwich’s turned out this morning on “Cookin’ WIth Kaye”, heard Friday’s at 8:20am on AM1370 KDTH. In honor of the Big Game Sunday, Jeff Cremer from Cremer’s Grocery on Rhomberg and I had a “Sandwich Off” today.

To show my support of the Philadelphia Eagles, I made “Philly Cheesesteak” sandwiches and Jeff Cremer made “BBQ Beef Brisket” sandwiches and to show off a bit, “Pork Burnt Ends”. Both sandwiches were “The Bomb”, a huge hit with my co-workers, and me!

My Philly sandwich didn’t take as long at Jeff’s BBQ Brisket sandwich did, but, either way, you won’t go wrong. It was worth the time put in on smoking the brisket for the outcome, without a doubt! They Philly sandwich is so simple, it’s stupid!!!

I made it as authentic as I could, with one exception. I used Beef Tri-Tip Steak from Cremer’s, usually, an authentic Philly Cheesesteak is made with thinly sliced Beef Rib Eye, and it’s like $19lb. Tri-Tip, It runs $8.99lb for one piece. Mine was 3lbs., and enough meat to make at least 12 Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches. Sorry, I’m not spending that much money on Rib Eye meat, it’s just not worth it, since the Tri-Tip is so good! And, you can make it up ahead of time and keep it in the fridge, bring it out, warm and slather with warmed Cheese Whiz!

Jeff’s recipe is a bit long, so, I’ll include a link to that you can check it out there. https://www.cuisineathome.com/…/joes-kansas-city-style…/

Here’s my easy Philly Cheesesteak Recipe-

Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches
8 hoagie rolls (sliced most of the way through)
2-3 lbs. thinly sliced beef tri-tip steak
2 large yellow onions, diced
1 jar Cheese Whiz, warmed
4 tbsp. vegetable oil
Salt and pepper

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and ¼ tsp. kosher salt and cook, stirring frequently, until onions are translucent and lightly browned, about 10-12 minutes.

Remove onions from pan and set aside.  Increase heat to medium-high and add sliced steak, 1 tsp. kosher salt, and ½ tsp. pepper. Stir and cook 3 minutes, turning beef occasionally. Stir in the onions when the steak looks about halfway done.

While onions cook, preheat oven to 250-degrees F. Place hoagie buns on a parchment lined baking sheet and warm hoagie rolls in oven. When steak and onions are ready, use a spatula and add to center of a warmed hoagie bun.

Add a couple tbsp. cheese whiz to sandwich and serve hot.
