The United States Coast Guard is continuing to keep recreational boat traffic off the Mississippi River until further notice due to the current conditions.
Lieutenant Eric Kiehlmeier with the U.S. Coast Guard says conditions are improving upstream of Dubuque, but much of the river is still in the High Water Action Phase. He says there are more factors than just the crest of the river being considered before opening the river again.
The Coast Guard took the rare step of closing the river on July 3rd. Kiehlmeier says they know it’s frustrating for those who are anxious to get out on the water, but being to do so safely is their biggest concern.
Kiehlmeier says one way to keep up to date on when the river will be reopening is to monitor their Facebook page
