The first day of testimony completed yesterday in the trial against a Dubuque man accused of killing his mother. 28-year-old Tyler Dazey is facing first-degree murder and animal abuse charges after his mother, Jennifer Dazey, and her dog were found dead in January.
Our coverage partner KCRG is in the courtroom covering the trial and reports Dazey was absent from the courtroom yesterday after filing a handwritten motion refusing to appear or participate in proceedings. The Defense has repeatedly asked the judge to declare Dazey incompetent for trial, but those motions have been denied.
During opening statements, the prosecution told jurors all the evidence points to Tyler Dazey as the killer. Several Dubuque police officers took the stand.
Dazey’s attorneys questioned law enforcement if Dazey’s sister, whose whereabouts during her mother’s death were left uncertain during Wednesday’s testimonies, could be a suspect.
Police questioned Dazey’s sister following her mother’s death. Defense attorneys noted her calm reaction seen in police bodycam footage when officers told her about her mother’s death, but investigators testified people react to tragic news in different ways.
The second day of testimony is scheduled to resume this morning.
