Dubuque Police Officer Appeals Termination After Firearm Negligence Finding

NEWS SM

The Telegraph Herald reports the Dubuque Police Department has fired a patrol officer after officials found he misfired a personal handgun into his neighbor’s house while off-duty and allegedly lied about the incident.

The officer, 26-year old Aidan Carr has appealed the termination and has been given an appeal date of November 8th to plead his case.

According to documents released, on the morning of August 14th, police were called to a house on Morningview Road after the resident told dispatchers a bullet pierced her window and struck her couch.  An investigating officer came to Carr’s nearby home an inquired if he had witnessed anything, he reportedly said he didn’t, however a bullet hole was found in the wall and a loaded handgun nearby.  Carr reportedly then told them about how the gun had accidently misfired.

Carr was not charged with reckless use of a firearm as it was ruled to be an accident. His termination was effective September 27th, but his union, Dubuque Police Protective Association, is supporting his appeal.
