The Wells Fargo arena jinx for the Wahlert Girls basketball program is over as the Golden Eagles defeated Spirit Lake 51-46 in the Class 3A quarterfinals last night. The win marked the 2nd win in school history at the state tournament, but the first at Wells Fargo with the previous win at the old Veterans Auditorium back in 2004.
It was not easy as Wahlert struggled through difficult first half shooting and trailed 23-19 at half, but came out and outscored Spirit Lake in the 3rd quarter to take a 3 point lead and then held off the Indians in the 4th quarter for the 5 point victory. Claire Lueken led the way with 26 points and 5 rebounds. Wahlert now 20-4 will play in the 3A semi-finals on Thursday afternoon at 3:15.
