Dubuque Sheriff Kennedy Defends Declining Offer To Join Federal ICE Program

DUBUQUE COUNTY

Dubuque County Sheriff Joe Kennedy says he stands by his decision to decline an offer to join a federal ICE program.

During a meeting of the Dubuque County Supervisors on Monday, Kennedy told those in attendance his office does not have enough staff to join the federal ICE Task Force program and also ensure public safety in other areas.

Kennedy says his decision does not mean they will not assist ICE, he says his office has and will enforce the law and cooperate with federal immigration requests.

By not joining the program, Kennedy warns Dubuque will likely be placed on a list by the federal government, flagging the county as a “sanctuary jurisdiction.”

About 60 people attended the meeting for and against the decision.
