An over 40-year old homicide investigation in Dubuque County is being suspended.
Yesterday, the Dubuque County Attorney’s Office, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, and Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office announced the suspension of the investigation into the August 1984 death of Charles Jaeger of Dyersville. Investigators say they received new information on the case in 2023. The agencies say the person whom they believe killed Jaeger is already serving two life sentences in another state for crimes committed after the death of Jaeger.
The County Attorney says in making the decision ,they considered how many witnesses would be available along with the cost to taxpayers of both prosecuting and incarcerating the person when they are already serving two life sentences elsewhere.
They say the identity of the suspect or motive in the case is not being released unless they decide to prosecute the individual in the future. Officials also say the recent investigation confirmed members of Jaeger’s family had no knowledge or involvement in the homicide.
