The Illinois Attorney General has detailed charges against a Galena Police Officer arrested for allegedly possessing child sexual abuse material.
Yesterday the Attorney General’s office announced they have charged 23-year old Eli Barthel of Freeport, with two Class 2 felony counts of child sexual assault material possession, each punishable by up to seven years of prison, and one Class 3 felony count of child sexual assault material possession, punishable by up to five years in prison.
Barthel was arrested on Friday after investigators conducted a search of his residence in Freeport and discovered the materials. He is currently being held in the Stephenson County Jail. The FBI assisted in the investigation.
Galena Police say following his arrest, Barthel was placed on administrative leave pending termination.
