A Dubuque woman who took a plea deal in a case regarding her two month old child’s death has been sentenced.
Yesterday in Dubuque County District Court, 26-year old Valessa Matlock received a sentence of five years of probation. In March, Matlock pled guilty to a charge of neglect or abandonment of a dependent person. State prosecutors had recommended a 10-year prison sentence.
In June 2023, Matlock’s two month old son was found unresponsive at her home and was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Following an investigation, Dubuque Police arrested Matlock and she was originally charged with four counts including child endangerment leading to death.
