This week, the Dubuque City Council approved an updated ordinance on the use of consumer fireworks in the city limits.

The updated ordinance reflects recent changes to Iowa law, which no longer allows municipalities to prohibit fireworks during daylight hours on July 3, July 4, and December 31.

Under the updated ordinance, use of consumer fireworks is allowed within the Dubuque city limits on July 3rd from 9 in the morning until 10 in the evening, July 4th from 9 in the morning until 11 that night and December 31st from 9 in the morning until 11:59

Consumer fireworks use remains prohibited within the Dubuque city limits on all other days of the year.

Officials add those wishing to use consumer fireworks must do so on their own property or with the consent of the property owner where the use is planned. Fireworks use will not be allowed on any public property, including streets, right-of-way, sidewalks, parks, trails, or open spaces.

The City of Dubuque urges residents to demonstrate caution and consideration of neighbors in their use of consumer fireworks during the allowed times, as fireworks can be upsetting for children, pets, and those with post-traumatic stress disorders. Continued dry weather could also increase the risk of fires related to fireworks use.

Anyone cited for violating the ordinance will be charged with a simple misdemeanor and subject to a fine of at least $250. To report a violation of this ordinance, please call the non-emergency dispatch number at 563.589.4415.
