Dubuque Teen Wounded In Officer Involved Shooting Pleads Guilty To Charges

DUBUQUE COURTHOUSE

A Dubuque teenager has pled guilty to the charges which led to an officer-involved shooting last year in Dubuque.

17-year old Lorenzo Cruz now has a sentencing hearing scheduled for July 28th in Dubuque County District Court. Online court records show Cruz entered the guilty plea last week for two felony charges in the case.

On Christmas Eve, police were called to the area of the 500 block of Nevada Street where Cruz was threatening another person and was possibly in possession of a gun. When officers attempted to arrest Cruz, he threatened them with a knife and refused repeated commands to drop the weapon. Authorities say he then came at the officers who both fired at him after an attempt to use a Taser failed.  Cruz was hospitalized after being wounded in the shoulder and arm.

The Dubuque County Attorney ruled officers were justified in their actions and were allowed to return to duty.
