Univ. of Iowa and Dubuque put new pump system to the test

CORALVILLE, Iowa (KCRG) – Flash flooding has impacted parts of Dubuque for years, and even this summer. Professionals with the University of Iowa and the city of Dubuque are working together to create a system simulating a rainstorm that could flood more than 1,000 businesses and homes. Yesterday at an event in Coralville, researchers and engineers showed Dubuque city leaders what they could do to minimize damage next time.

Instead of forcing all that water underground, this project aims to redirect it to more “natural” places like creeks, ponds, and green spaces.

The pump is part of the Bee Branch Watershed Flood Mitigation Project, a $250 million investment to change how storm water moves through the area.

The construction for this system is already in progress and officials say it should be completed by August 2027.
