The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says bird flu has been detected in Dubuque.
Within the city, H5 avian influenza has been confirmed in Canada geese from two sites, with a number of additional reports coming from the surrounding area and specifically Bergfeld and Heritage Ponds.
Classic signs of bird flu include tremors, irregular head and neck movements, and circling. Other symptoms in some cases include cloudy eyes and lethargy.
The DNR says you should keep your distance from sick birds or those that are easily approached. Officials are asking any sightings be reported to Dubuque County Conservation.
Many human cases of H5 avian influenza have been linked to close contact with infected poultry and dairy cattle, while no human cases have been linked to wild birds in the United States.
