The Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office is warning the community about a new fraudulent tap-to-pay scam.
In this scam, the scammers are personally approaching potential victims in front of businesses claiming they are collecting money for a sick or injured person, or some other reasons to gain sympathy.
The scammer refuses cash and attempts to get victims to use tap-to-pay readers on the scammer’s personal phone for a fraudulent amount.
Once the transaction has been made, victims have reported the suspect making multiple additional transactions using their account information.
