Iowa’s new Hands-Free Driving Law will begin the penalty stage when the calendar turns over to January.
Dubuque Police Information Officer Luke Bock.
The hands-free law prohibits drivers from using electronic devices while driving unless the device is in a hands-free setting.
Since the law went into effect July 1st Lieutenant Bock says dozens of warnings have been issued to drivers in Dubuque, but he says beginning January 1st citations with fines and court cost totaling $170 dollars may be given.
Statistics show distracted driving is one of the leading causes of traffic crashes.
Last year a survey of over 13-hundred Iowans showed 90 percent of those considered using a cell phone while driving to be extremely dangerous, even though 50% admitted to driving with a phone in their hand.
