Man Shot during Home Break-in Sentenced to Prison

A Maquoketa man who was shot after breaking into a woman’s home and assaulting her in Jackson County has received a 10 year prison sentence. 25 year old Mitchell R. Hankemeier of rural Maquoketa was given the sentence in Iowa District Court of Jackson County after pleading guilty to first-degree attempted burglary and domestic assault with strangulation.
Court records say that on April 1st of this year Hankemeier entered a home in rural Maquoketa and assaulted and choked the female resident of the home. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department reported that responding law enforcement officers discovered that an adult male identified as Hankemeier had been shot several times during the altercation at the residence and was airlifted to Iowa City.
