At the Girls High School State Basketball Tournament in Des Moines, the Maquoketa Cardinals made history last night.
The Cardinals won the Class 3A state l championship with a 59-42 victory over defending state champion Mount Vernon claiming the program’s first state championship in school history.
After trailing 27-24 at halftime, a strong second half propelled Maquoketa to victory, especially the fourth quarter outscoring Mount Vernon 16-2 in the final frame. Cora Widel led the way for the Cardinals with 21 and was named to the all-tournament team along with teammate Maelyn Kluever .
Wahlert Catholic freshman Emily Tanny also was named to the all-tournament team.
