(KCRG) Dubuque County Sheriff Joe Kennedy has declined to join the federal 287(g) ICE Task Force program. The program authorizes local and state law enforcement to carry out immigration enforcement duties. Sheriff Kennedy says his office has and will enforce those laws and cooperate with federal immigration requests. Kennedy says he doesn’t have a problem helping ICE if they need assistance, but doesn’t feel that it’s in the department’s best interest to be giving up their personnel to do someone else’s job. Kennedy plans to discuss his decision to reject the federal 287(g) ICE Task Force program invitation with the Dubuque County Supervisors on Monday.
