Dubuque County Sheriff’s Deputy Seriously Wounded in Shooting

A Dubuque County Sheriff’s deputy was seriously wounded and the suspect is dead following an early morning traffic stop in Dubuque County which resulted in shots being fired. According to the sheriff’s department, the incident happened around 4:30 on Highway 151 northbound near Cascade.

The sheriff says several area law officers were involved in the stop during which the suspect pulled out a handgun and fired. The suspect was also shot by one of the officers.

The injured deputy whose name hasn’t been released was first taken to Mercy Hospital in Dubuque then transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals where he is in serious but stable condition. The suspect who also hasn’t been named died a short time later.

The deputies and officers involved have been placed on Critical Incident Leave in accordance with the policies of each agency involved.
The investigation continues. Highway 151 northbound near the incident was closed to traffic most of the morning while emergency crews were there.
