The Bellevue Marquette Catholic Defenders advanced to the Class 1A semifinals with a 58-55 upset win over Bishop Garrigan at the State Boys Basketball Tournament in Des Moines.
The Defenders led by as many as 12 points in the first half and held a 31-24 lead at the half. Bishop Garrigan made a third quarter charge and eventually tied it at 50, but could never take the lead as Marquette advanced to the final four for the third straight season. The Defenders were led in scoring by Louis Gonner with 17 and got a double-double from Justin Severson with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Marquette now (24-2) will meet #2 seed MMCRU (26-1) on Thursday afternoon at 3:45pm back at the Casey’s Center. Pregame coverage begins at 3:25pm on AM 1370 KDTH.
Earlier in the day , a furious 2nd half rally came up short for the Bellevue Comets falling to Burlington Notre Dame 68-62.
The Comets found themselves down by as many as 20 points late in the second period and trimmed it to 34-18 at half.
Bellevue tightened things up defensively in the 3rd quarter and shots started falling cutting the lead to just four points late in the quarter, but unfortunately couldn’t get any closer in the 4th quarter. Bellevue was led by Cameron Casel with 16 points, Keshawn DeShaw had a double- double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Bellevue finished the season with a record of 22-and-4.
