Coverage partner KCRG reports workers have removed the 1885 painting “Peace in Union” from the wall of the Galena and U.S. Grant Museum for the first time in 88 years as the museum prepares to relocate to a new facility later this year.

The 9-by-12-foot painting was completed by artist Thomas Nast, capturing the surrender of General. Robert E. Lee to General Ulysses S. Grant marking the end of the Civil War.

Galena and Jo Daviess County Historical Society Executive Director Tessa Flak says the painting was a gift to the people of Galena and the museum acts as its caretaker.

The painting is expected to return to Galena when the museum opens at its new location near the Grant Home State Historic Site later this year.
