Chicago Man Sentenced in Tap to Pay Scam

DUBUQUE COURTHOUSE

A Chicago man will spend prison time after a guilty plea to charges of using a tap to pay device on a phone to steal money after giving a phony story.

25-year old Amari Jones was recently sentenced to serve 5 years in prison, two other charges were dismissed.

Jones was one of three men arrested by Dubuque Police accused of soliciting donors outside two Dubuque grocery stores in September claiming their cousin had been shot and needed money to help him.

The men refused cash donations, but asked to use their phone which had a chip reader attached allowing them to access bank accounts to steal thousands of dollars from at least two victims.
