Coverage partner KCRG reports a settlement agreement will punish the former Beckman Catholic head football coach for telling players they were “like family” and taking students to a football game with parental permission.

In January, the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners issued a finding of probable cause against former Dyersville Beckman football coach Cole Mather. The initial charge cited an inappropriate relationship with students but did not give any other details.

This month, the board released a settlement agreement that reduces the charge with more detail and punishes Mather.

As part of the settlement agreement, Mather denied any wrongdoing but agreed to take an ethics class as part of a 1-year probation and receive a written reprimand on his teaching license. Mather is still listed as a physical education teacher and football coach on Beckman’s website.
