A Galena woman has been given a federal prison sentence after pleading guilty to fraud charges.
39-year old Jackie Smith was sentenced this week to 3 ½ years in prison for fraudulently getting around 100-thousand dollars in pandemic-era unemployment benefits and then converting it to cash at a Dubuque casino.
An investigation determined Smith filed a false University of Iowa unemployment application and recruited others in exchange for a share of the proceeds.
Smith was also ordered to make nearly 96-thousand dollars in restitution to three states.
Prosecutors said the scheme involved more than $200 thousand dollars in pandemic-era unemployment benefits in total.
She was one of four Galena residents convicted in the scheme.
