The Wahlert Catholic girls basketball team’s second half comeback fell a little short in the 3A state semifinals yesterday afternoon at the Caseys Center in Des Moines. The Golden Eagles fell to defending state champion Mount Vernon 53-49. Wahlert trailed by 14 at halftime, but outscored Mt. Vernon 20-8 in the third quarter to trail by just two after 3 quarters. Wahlert tied it at 45-45 in the fourth but could not overtake the Mustangs.
Emily Tanny scored 18 points while Celia Scherr had 11 and Claire King added eight as Wahlert finished 19-and-6 on the season.
Tonight for the 3A championship, Mount Vernon will play Maquoketa who won the other 3A semi-final. The second seeded Cardinals defeated Des Moines Christian 61-54 after trailing by 8 points at halftime.
