Colorado Man Arrested for Stealing Thousands in Dubuque Scam

jail prison sentence arrest

Following an investigation which began nearly two years ago, Dubuque Police have arrested a Colorado man on charges of first degree theft.

30-year- old Mohammad Raza is accused of scamming a 70-year old Dubuque woman into withdrawing $25-thousand dollars from her bank  and then meeting up with her to collect the money.

In July 2024, the woman told police she received a pop-up on her laptop directing  her to contact a 1-800 number due to a security breach. She said the man she spoke with said there was suspicious activity on her bank accounts and instructed her to withdraw the money. She was then told an agent would meet her in person and collect the money which would be held until the fraudulent activity was resolved. The woman agreed and delivered the money, but realized later it was a scam.

Police say traffic camera footage helped them identify the vehicle Raza was a passenger in leading to his arrest Friday afternoon. He is being held in the Dubuque County Jail on a $250-thousand dollar bond.
