Southwestern Advances to State Boys Basketball Tournament, Lancaster Falls Short with Loss

The Southwestern High School boys’ basketball team has advanced to the Wisconsin High School State Tournament later this week.

The Wildcats defeated Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 44-43 Saturday afternoon in a Division 5 sectional final at Westby mounting a 13-point coming back to earn the programs first state tournament appearance since 1988.

Southwestern now 23-and-6 will play Friday morning at the Kohl Center at either 9 or 10:30 a.m., pending the seedings for the final four teams.

In a Division 3 sectional final played at Oregon, Lancaster fell to Lake Mills 85-53.

College Basketball

At the Big 10 Tournament:

CHICAGO (AP) — Yaxel Lendeborg made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds remaining, and No. 3 Michigan beat Nick Boyd and No. 23 Wisconsin 68-65 to advance to the Big Ten Tournament championship.

Wisconsin’s Austin Rapp made six 3-pointers while scoring each of his 18 points in the second half.

The Badgers (24-10) had reached the Big Ten tourney final in each of the past two years, losing to the Wolverines last year. Michigan will meet Purdue later today for the Big 10 Tourney Title.

 

Women’s Basketball

UNI women’s basketball ended its MVC Tournament run in the Semifinals losing to Murray State 72-59.

Regional

  • Iowa 13, Penn State 4 (former Hempstead prep Logan Runde with the win on the mound allowing two runs on two hits over six innings with six strikeouts.)

 

Softball

  • Loras lost to Worcester Polytechnic 3-0 and beat Maine-Farmington 13-1 in Kissimmee, Florida
  • Clarke split with Graceland winning 2-1 and losing 5-1

Regional

  • Iowa swept Illinois 7-1 and 2-0.

 

Men’s Lacrosse

  • Dubuque 12, Carroll 8
  • Clarke 9, Marian (WI) 4

 

Men’s Volleyball

  • Xavier 3, Clarke 0

 

USHL Hockey

  • Youngstown 4, Dubuque 1
