University of Dubuque in 16th at NCAA D3 Tournament in Palm Desert, Calif.: The Spartans shot a 23-over- par 311 for 16th place after the first day of the NCAA Division III tournament at Firecliff. The Spartans are four strokes below the cut line.

 

Baseball

The eighth-seeded University of Iowa baseball team rallied from an early four-run deficit to defeat No. 9 seed Illinois, 10-6, on Tuesday afternoon in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament at Charles Schwab Field Omaha. Iowa moves to 33-21 on the season.The Hawkeyes face No. 12 seed Michigan State. Illinois faces 5th seed Purdue this morning.

In Big 10 baseball post season awards:  Former Dubuque Hempstead prep Kellen Strohmeyer of the Hawkeyes was named a Big 10 Sportsmanship Award winner.
