A Jackson County deputy killed in the line of duty nearly 159 years ago will be recognized today in Washington D.C. during the 38th Annual Candlelight Vigil being held during National Police Week.
The name of Samuel Cronk who died at the age 23 in 1867 after being shot while serving subpoenas near Cottonville in Jackson County will be placed on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Wall. The wall honors officers across the United States who died in the line of duty.
Although charges were filed, the case was never brought to resolution with prosecution.
Jackson County Sheriff Brent Kilburg submitted an application to honor Cronk.
