Traffic Camera Legislation Heads To Governor’s Desk

Capitol

Iowa is close to having statewide regulations for automated traffic cameras.

A bill putting rules in places for those cameras has passed both the House and Senate and now heads to the Governor’s desk. This would specifically target cameras that cite speeders.

The bill says the money earned from traffic cameras can’t go to a city’s General Fund. The money can only fund transportation projects or police or fire departments.

The bill also puts in place a permit process and requires justifying each camera with data.

If Reynolds signs the legislation, Dubuque’s efforts to implement speed cameras would remain on hold until at least 2026 because the bill places a moratorium on new camera installations until that time.
